Assam Hathikuli Estate BOP Organic

  • 800

Tasting Notes: toasty, cinnamon, black pepper

Description:  This Assam is rich, malty, and smooth. Harvested from the second plucking period of the year and crafted into BOP (broken orange pekoe) grade, which is an intentional small broken leaf structure. This broken leaf style offers more surface area of leaf, therefore, a deep and strong brew occurs.

In this tea, woodsy and toasty bread notes linger with spiced cinnamon and black pepper notes. Hints of moist earth linger in each sip. A pleasant astringent finish balances the heavy malty notes.

This Assam tea takes milk and sugar well and is also excellent straight up for those that love hearty black teas. We recommend this selection for those that enjoy our Irish Breakfast, Scottish Breakfast, Assam Halmari, or Assam Bukhial.

In the northeastern state of Assam in India, black teas are grown that are malty, hearty, spiced, and bold. The distinct flavor of Assam black teas are due to the region’s heavy rainfall with hot and humid temperatures. The signature flavor profile of Assam pairs well with milk and sugar but can also be sipped straight up.

This smooth Assam tea is produced on a lovely tea estate named Hathikuli. The word Hathikuli is derived from the Assamese words “Hathi” (elephant) and “Kuli” (frequent) which translates to a place that is frequently visited by elephants. The Hathikuli Tea Estate cultivates tea on one of the largest certified organic cultivation areas in the Assam Valley that is south of the Bramaputhra River. The estate is located neighboring the Kaziranga National Park which is a world heritage site. This organic tea estate falls in two districts: Golaghat district and the Karbi-Anglong district. The tea garden stretches 9.3 miles.
