88th Night Shincha
Tasting Notes: fresh greens, edamame, spring pea, soft umami, smooth finish
Description: 88th Night Shincha is a once-a-year green tea treasure. The word Shincha means “new tea” in Japanese and refers to the very first harvest of the year.
This tea is crafted from the earliest tea leaves of the season, plucked on the 88th night after the start of spring in Japan, known as Hachijū Hachiya. The Shincha harvest, which typically falls around May 2, marks the beginning of Japan’s tea season. According to tradition, tea picked on this night is said to bring good health and long life.
The result of harvesting on the 88th night is the freshest sencha green tea you can drink. It is vivid, tender, and full of spring vitality.
This 88th Night Shincha is a deep-steamed fukamushi sencha grown in the high-elevation gardens of Shizuoka, near Mt. Fuji. It brews a soft, smooth cup with notes of fresh greens, spring peas, edamame, grassiness, and a gentle, lingering umami.
Shincha is considered one of the most premium teas of the year because the leaves are plucked at peak nutrient density after the winter months.
We recommend this tea for all green tea lovers. It is a vibrant Japanese tea, a cup of spring at its purest, with centuries of tradition steeped into each sip.
Due to the short harvest period and global demand, Shincha is limited in supply. Once this year’s batch is gone, it will not return until the next harvest in spring 2026.
Note: Shincha leaves are delicate and require less steeping time than other sencha varieties.
